Dear [Council Member's name],
Here in the US, police who break the law shouldn’t be above the law. But time and time again, police officers commit obvious misconduct, from harassment to murder, and get off with a slap on the wrist, or no punishment at all. In NYC, our current appointed complaint board has no power to impose discipline, leaving the police to police themselves. This has to change.
New Yorkers need an elected, independent board that has the oversight power to represent them and hold police accountable with binding discipline. A board that answers to the people, not the Mayor and city establishment.
The NYC City Council can pass legislation for an Elected Civilian Review Board and Independent Prosecutor.
An elected, empowered board and an elected independent prosecutor would provide desperately needed recourse to those who suffer under a police force that is often abusive, violent, racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic and antagonistic to the general population of New York.
We demand that the City Council pass this amendment and bring this proposal to voters. It's time for NYC to take this historic chance to give the people the power to hold police accountable.
